Fruits of Our Labor August 2, 2010

Greetings Friends!

The husband and I have been working on something pretty awesome for the past couple of months, and we’re finally ready to share it with the world.

Looks delicious doesn’t it? When we first bought our house we knew that we wanted to plant a garden, but there were so many options about what to plant, and then of course we had to decide quantity.

In the end we planted 2 tomato plants, 2 cucumbers, 2 bell peppers, a zucchini, and a jalapeño plant. Luckily for  us every single plant has had fruit, as you can see in the picture above. I’m so happy with how our vegetables are doing, especially since we managed to kill our herb garden twice. Oh well, better luck next time, right?

But at least we have all of these tasty morsels to eat our way through:

And there is plenty more where that came from. Any recipe ideas to help us make good use of our produce?

Let me tell you, the stuff we pick from our own backyard is a thousand times more delicious than the produce we used to get from the store. Even if we do have to work a lot harder to get it. And we’ve been battling a hoard of beetles that seem to be eating the leaves at lightning speed. We have to pick any ripened veggies as soon as we see them, so the little buggers don’t get them first. We’ve been successful so far.

We’re saving a lot of money as well, which is always a plus in my book, since we’re in strict grocery budget. There’s more on our grocery budget coming up in another post, so stay tuned for that one.

We’re already re-arranging the yard so that we can make an even bigger garden next year. Any plants you would recommend?

We’re always looking to try out new vegetables, and maybe even some fruits too. We have a strawberry plant that was particularly amazing this year, and we wouldn’t mind trying similar things. I’m actually hoping to convince the husband to plant okra, and maybe some watermelon. But we have plenty of time to plan.

I’ve had such a blast watching the plants grow, and we’ve been waiting patiently for the tomatoes to turn red. I’m salivating thinking about all of the delicious tomato sandwiches we can make now that they’re finally ready, and I definitely see a Caprese salad in our future.

I’m off to take the husband to dinner since he had a rough day at work, and then we’re going to take the Bear for a walk.

Question for you:

Do you have a garden? What are your must have plants?

Any recommendations on what to do with a plethora of rosemary? It’s the only herb we planted that survived, and I am stumped about what to with it.
